Somatic Practice For Nervous System Regulation - What It Is, and Why It Matters
Most ADHD and AuDHD support focuses on productivity and executive functions. And that helps - but it relies on one thing working first: a regulated nervous system so you can actually access the prefrontal cortex - the CEO part of the brain.
Ways HoloADHD can help you support your nervous system

Somatic practice combines two things: an understanding of how the autonomic nervous system shapes behavior, and hands-on practices that work through the body rather than through thinking alone.
Polyvagal theory describes how the nervous system continuously scans for cues of safety and threat below conscious awareness, moving between states of social engagement, mobilization, and shutdown. Somatic practice provides the entry point — attention to sensation, breath, posture, movement, and the felt sense of contact with another person.
Together, they shift the question from why can't I make myself do this? to what state is my system in, and what does it need? Rather than overriding resistance, procrastination, or overwhelm with more effort, clients learn to read their own physiological signals, expand their window of tolerance, and return to a regulated state more reliably. Over time this builds capacity - not just for calm, but for engagement, follow-through, and connection.

EFT, commonly known as tapping, is a body-based technique for reducing emotional charge. I help the client tune into a specific problem — such as the anxiety before a difficult conversation, the tightness that shows up around a deadline, the belief that surfaces when they're about to be visible — they rate its intensity, and we tap with the fingertips on a set sequence of points on the face, chest, and hand while voicing what's true about it.
The combination matters. Naming the issue directly brings it online rather than pushing it away; the tapping helps reduce the physiological arousal by the amygdala that accompanies it.
What clients often report is a shift in how loaded something feels — the situation hasn't changed, but the reactivity to it has, and choices that felt impossible become available.
EFT works well alongside nervous-system-focused approaches because it's specific and portable. It gives clients a concrete thing to do in the moment, and progress is trackable: intensity ratings before and after each round make it clearer whether something is shifting or needs a different angle.

Breathwork is a functional, evidence-informed practice of using specific breath patterns to directly influence your nervous system state - a physiological lever you can pull in real time.
For ADHD or AuDHD nervous systems, this matters more than it does for most: so much of what looks like a focus, motivation or an emotional regulation problem is actually a body stuck in fight, flight, freeze, or shutdown, unable to access the calm-alert state where clarity and follow-through actually live.
Breathwork bypasses the parts of executive function that ADHD makes unable to access. You don't need to remember a mantra, follow a multi-step protocol, or rely on willpower in the moment — you just breathe differently, and your body responds.
It meets your nervous system where it is, works with your biology, and gives you a way back to regulation that doesn't depend on the very executive functions that are already under strain.
A dysregulated nervous system affects your ability to think, feel, and act with intention
When stuck in fight-or-flight, or freeze states, your body stays in survival mode.
This causes blood flow and bodily resources to continually shift away from the prefrontal cortex…
…so you have heightened trouble with clarity of thought, emotional regulation and doing what you intend.
Dysregulation Affects Your Mind, Your Mood, And Your Momentum
Your body's state and your mind's state aren't separate. They move together.
When your nervous system is stuck in activation, it gets genuinely harder for your brain to:
shift strategies
let go of a plan that isn't working
change course
problem-solve
regulate emotion
This is why you can know exactly what you "should" do — and still not be able to do it.
Regulation is often the missing piece for clarity, calm, and acting in ways the situation needs.
